“Tintin in the Congo” sometimes evokes arguments today, but it is universally agreed that the book mirrors stereotypes that were common at the time it was written. Hergé himself considered the book to be a “sin of his youth”, but a careful study of the pages shows us that even at the time of writing the author was showing a certain measure of cynicism towards the role of his country in Africa as well as expressing the customary paternalistic viewpoint.
The French-language book “Tintin au Congo de papa” explores the history behind the best-selling Tintin book (over 10 million copies sold), and is illustrated with hitherto unpublished images from the Studios Hergé and the archives of “Le Soir” newspaper.
